So on average, 33% of lines in media go to female characters, 67% go to male characters.
You’d think a TV series about a town with no men would improve on that, not have more inequality.
I was looking forward to this but after seeing the tweet, I decided to do a little digging before taking out a new subscription to see it. What I found isn’t heartening.
Far from Godless as being about “a quiet town populated only by women” it’s as big of a sausage fest as you’re likely to find outside of gay porn.
Of the 23 cast members credited in all 7 episodes, 17 are men (78%) and only 5 are women (22%).
The show has 106 cast members in total. 74 are men (70%) & 32 women (30%)
Of the total cast, 54 male characters (72%) get given a name, like Bob.
Only 17 female characters (53%) are worthy of a name though.
Some unnamed gems include Jacob’s Wife, Truckee’s Piute Grandmother, and Seventeen-year-old girl (is there a character-driven reason this unnamed character has to be 17? wouldn’t it have been easier to just call her Pam?)
Needless to say, there is no male equivalent, so no Sue’s husband, Shelly’s grandfather or 17-year-old-boy.
Hey @netflix with your “women only” town, YOU’RE ACTUALLY DOING WORSE THAN THE SEXIST INDUSTRY STANDARD!
