It’s amazing how there is a generation of people who hate Stan Lee for ???

The man, even in his early years denounced racism as a special type of evil that can’t be defeated with a bullet.

Marvel was the first mainstream comic to show a gay marriage.

And the accusations of him sexually harassing a nurse were false. and proven to be false.

The man has denounced racism and promoted tolerance and diversity for years, much more than what most people who age would have ever dared consider. Hell, he created Black Panther, the first black comic hero

But all because the man didn’t want to make Peter Parker black and bisexual he obviously is a racist and homophobe… Despite…

Luke Cage

Falcon

Storm

Spider Girl (Corazon)

Miles Morales

Moonstar

Karma

Black Panther

Shuri

Kimura

Lady Deathstrike

Echo

Jubilee

Monet St. Croix

Hulkling

America Chavez

Northstar and hosting the first gay marriage depicted in mainstream comics IN 1992 WAY BEFORE GAY MARRIAGE WAS EVEN LEGALIZED

Valkyrie

Wiccian and many others…

But y’all asses over here fucking ignoring the shit out of them like the only thing Stan Lee and Marvel ever made was Spiderman and Peter Parker all because the man doesn’t think that you should redefine established or preexisting characters. Why?

Because he believed in creating NEW characters, new characters who had their OWN personalities, who had their OWN stories, who had their OWN fans

He wanted to make new things, not redefine what already exists. He wanted to make NEW characters and stories that people could connect to. NEW characters who could stand on their own as opposed to just being “This character but now xyz.”

He wanted characters who had their own life and vibrancy to them.

Yet y’all asses fucking mad he didn’t make Peter Parker black while you ignoring the fuck out of Miles Morales. Yet y’all asses are mad he didn’t make Peter Parker bi or gay while ignoring the fact that the Marvel comic version of Deadpool and Loki are both bisexual.

Y’all fucking ignoring the POC and LGBT+ characters that exist in the Marvel universe all because you wanna be like ~~uwu 20gayteen~~

Until y’all asses start recognizing POC and LGBT+ characters THAT ALREADY EXIST you don’t get to say shit about anything else being gay.

DON’T SIT THERE AND IGNORE CANON LGBT AND POC CHARACTERS AND THEN ACT LIKE STAN LEE WAS A RACIST OR HOMOPHOBIC BIGOT

Fucking exactly. Fucks who hate just to hate and purposely ignore facts piss me the fuck off. If you do that shit fuck you.

Thank you for this. I’ve been really distressed about the discourse saying he was racist/homophobic/sexually harassed people, and I haven’t had the energy to do more of my own research, so I appreciate someone with a broader knowledge sharing this information.

I realize this isn’t D&D specific, but I want to signal boost it.

Stop making up scandals for the sake of a little drama, gosh dang it.

This post is wild…. Cause i’ve seen nothing but valid criticisms of Stan Lee and his works and Stan Lee wasn’t even involved in half of the characters listed… even some of the things posted… are wrong. Northstar wasn’t depicting gay marriage in 1992…. Alpha Flight #106 in 1992 was Northstar’s coming out (Still very important as he was the first superhero to come out… it’s also worth noting he wasn’t the first comic book character to come out but the first hero, and even that’s a bit meh considering Northstar’s background but that’s not my point)

my point is that people are allow to be critical of other people. Stan Lee did a lot to push comics forward and was a pretty good activist during the days of Civil Rights. But this post has misinformation and it’s still valid to be critical of a public figure, especially one as complex as Stan Lee.

100% Like, OP was straight-up just listing queer/PoC Marvel characters, which, yeah, absolutely signal boost that, but Stan Lee had nothing to do with the vast majority of them. Stan Lee was incredible in many ways, but don’t attribute his successors’ achievements to him.

And, moreover, on the subject of “new characters of marginalized identities” vs “old characters redefined into marginalized identities,” like, Stan Lee himself was fine with that, at least some of the time. He responded positively to Iceman being gay, and in fact Iceman is a perfect example of a classic character being retconned/revealed as more than what he originally was.

And while new characters are great, for sure, they’ll *never* get the same recognition and renown as redefined classic characters. I mean, same year that we got the initial Iceman solo series, we also got Generation X, a series that featured a lesbian black girl, a gay white boy, and a gay Korean-American boy, the latter of whom was a *new character* created for that series. His name’s Nathaniel Carver, aka Hindsight. He’s fantastic. He’s also received nowhere *near* the level of buzz and awareness that Iceman has since coming out.

New queer and PoC characters are important and excellent and need to be made, but very, very rarely do you see them reach the same heights as classic characters; not for lack of quality, but for lack of exposure. That’s why redefining the identities of old characters, when possible, is not only great to do, but should be done.
